Now (It's Just the Gas) is a song from the musical which was cut from the movie.

Context[]

The song was not included in the film, as it was thought that it would make Seymour seem less innocent. The song takes place during Act 1 Scene 4, in which Seymour brings a gun into Orin's office, with the goal of killing Orin to feed to Audrey II. In the song, Seymour sets out to shoot Orin, but can't bring himself to fire the gun. Later, Orin emerges with a gas mask, which is slowly and uncontrollably filling with laughing gas, stuck on his head. He proceeds to beg Seymour to help him take off the mask. In the end, Seymour realizes that Orin will die if he (Seymour) remains passive, fulfilling his original goal while assuaging most of his guilt. Seymour does not help Orin out of his mask and, as a result, he (Orin) asphyxiates and dies.

1982 Off-Broadway Version[]

Seymour Orin
(Spoken) Oh boy, Seymour, the things we're gonna do to your mouth!
This is gonna be a pleasure!
I'm gonna want some nitrous oxide.
In fact, I'm gonna use my special gas mask!
Hold on, I'll be with you in a moment!
(singing) Now!
Do it now!
While he's gassing himself
To a palpable stupor,
The timing's ideal and the moment is super
To ready and fire and blow the sick bastard away!
(Cackling)
Now!
Do it now!
Just a flicker of pressure
Right here on the trigger
And Audrey won't have to put up with that pig for another day
(cackles)
Now... for the girl!
Now... for the plant!
Now... yes, I will!
(Cackles)
But I can't
(Spoken) Yes siree, Bob, I'm really flying now!
I'll just take the mask off now and,
Hey, it's stuck.
The mask, it's stuck.
The mask, it's stuck!
Help me get if off, will ya?
(Singing) Don't be
Fooled if I should giggle
Like a sappy, happy dope.
It's just the gas —
(He giggles.)
It's got me high —
But don't let that fact deceive you
Any moment I could die!
Though I giggle and I chortle,
Bear in mind I'm not immortal.
Why this whole thing strikes me funny
I don't know—
Hahahahaheheheheee
— 'Cause it really is a rotten way to go!
(Singing) What we have here is an ethical dilemma
'Less I help him get the mask removed
He doesn't have a prayer
True the gun was never fired,
But the way events transpired
I can finish him with simple
Laissez Faire.
Don't... be...
Fooled if I should chuckle
Like hyenas in a zoo,
It's just the gas—
(chuckles)
It turns me on.
But don't let my mirth deceive you,
Any moment I'll be gone!
All my vital signs are failing,
'Cause the oxide I'm inhaling
Makes it difficult as hell to catch my breath!
(gasps)
Are you dumb? Or hard of hearing?
Or relieved... my end is nearing?
Are you satisfied?
I've... laughed... my... self... to...
Death.
